Continental Connect

Riverwall

Ceramic bas-relief mural
Dimensions: approx. 20’ w x 6’h

Location: Private residence, Thoreau, NM

Completed: 1992

Continental Connect  was conceived as a topographic map-like wall, freely suggesting the hills, volcanic upheavals, ridges and other geological formations in the area of New Mexico known as the Continental Divide. By referencing the region as a connect rather than a divide, my intent was to focus on the demarcation of landforms that decide the direction of water flow: from this area, water either flows toward the Gulf of Mexico or toward the Pacific Ocean, depending on where a drop of rain lands. This region connects, via plateaus and mountains, the western section of the North American continent with the mid-west and eastern sections. The bas-relief mural is installed on a private residence wall in Thoreau, NM, a community that sits along this geological feature.
